Freshwater Fishing Reels Make Fishing More Enjoyable
Fishing tackle has made some very big strides over the last one hundred years. Previously the rod was a cane pole and line. This fishing tool was ten feet long and the corresponding fishing line ten to fifteen feet in length to which the terminal tackle was tied to the end. The principle is simple and direct. A fisherman would swing the weight, and bait into the water and then sit back and wait for a bite. This approach has caught lots of fish over the years, and lost many of them as well.
In the very late eighteen hundreds first bait casting reels entered the market. These first reels were crude, and a lot of practice was needed to get the bait out farther than a cane pole without a backlash or a bird's nest as they are lovingly called. Early reels didn't have a level wind system that kept the line wound evenly and flat to the spool. The principle was simple, but didn't have any of the advantages that modern fishing reels of today incorporate. More fish were caught, but still many of them have been lost.
The nineteen fifties was the dawn of new freshwater fishing reels that worked easier and smoother than fishing reels of the past. New approaches into style and design came to fishing equipment. The very popular open face spinning reel has been developed and used in every aspect of fresh water fishing. The ease of the open face type of fishing reel put fishing into the hands of more of the fishing public.
More science has been applied to tackle than many other outdoor sports products. One company designed a very reliable freshwater fishing reel by the innovative use of a modified oilcan. After its perfection, the push button style spinning reel was a boon to the fresh water fishing reel industry. More innovations were added. A line brake, anti reverse and fully adjustable drag system is standard equipment for the basic spinning reel produced today.
Many more ideas have been added to level wind systems. Since the growth of the prolific professional fishing industry has occurred rapidly, technologies in the bearing industry have made backlashes almost a thing of the past in today's quality fishing reels. Adjustability and push button spool releases let the fisherman cast one eight-ounce lure twenty feet with accuracy that put the bait exactly where it must be placed to get a strike with ease, and no more free spooling bird's nests.
Fresh water fishing reels come in sizes to fit any rod and any fish that live in fresh water. This gives the fisherman the added satisfaction of being able to get more strikes and catch more fish than our grandfather's generation. Fishing reel prices have also moved in favor of the consumer making fishing more enjoyable and much more affordable for a family with equipment that is state of the art no matter what the price.
