A fisherman is fishing from a bridge and is using a "33.0-N test line." In other words, the line will sustain a maximum force of 33.0 N without breaking. What is the weight of the heaviest fish that can be pulled up vertically, when the line is reeled in (a) at constant speed and (b) with an acceleration whose magnitude is 1.66 m/s2?
Okay so this reel can sustain 33 N, got that? That means if there's any sort of force on that reel that totals more than 33 N it will break as i'm sure you know.
Now, what is weight? Weight is mass times gravity. Hopefully they taught you guys that. Anyway, knowing this, and that we're on Earth where gravity is 9.8 meters per second squared (or simply m/s^2), then we have weight equals "MASS times 9.8". Note that MASS here is the mass of the fish (or anything that's on the reel, like a whale, or something...)
a) If you pull the fish up at a constant speed, it doesn't add any effects. Constant speeds don't effect forces at all! That's one of Newton's laws. So then we can treat this question as if all we're dealing with is the 33 N and the "MASS times 9.8". So lets go to another one of Newton's laws:
F = MASS times ACCELERATION
In this case, the F on the left hand side is the force on the Reel, while the right hand side's ACCELL is just the acceleration of gravity, 9.8 And so we have
33 = MASS times 9.8 or MASS = 33 / 9.8 = 3.37 kg
That's it!
b) Okay now things get a little trickier. Now that you have an additional acceleration done by someone pulling the reel upwards (the fisherman probably) we have that the ACCELERATION from the formula above changes. Now it's GRAVITY plus ADDITIONAL. The additional here is the 1.66 and gravity is of course 9.8. So what does the new equation become?
F = MASS times ACCELERATION
F = MASS times (GRAVITY plus ADDITIONAL)
33 = MASS times (9.8 + 1.66)
Therefore MASS =33/ (9.8 + 1.66) = 2.87 kg
