What size treble hook do I use when trout fishing with powerbait?
I'm not sure what size I should use some people tell me to use 18 and some other 12 or 16
The most common size of treble hook for PB is size 18. I've caught 10 lb trout on the size 18. The smaller hook provides you with the flexibility to downsize your bait. Finicky trout will often pick up on a small bait size than a larger one. When fishing at private stocked lakes with fish in the 10+ class size sometimes I use the size 16 for additional strength, but if I don't get bites I'll scale back down to size 18.
Another tip when using PB you may want to shape it by rolling in your hands for a small worm tail about an inch long. Or, I like to even shape mine to look like those cheddar fish crackers. Good Luck!
