Crickets May Be The Answer In A Survival Situation
Crickets live in shallow tunnels dug beneath stones or dirt or in clumps of plant matter. Males can often be heard calling females for mating at night when they are more active. Marshes, caves, trees, and seashores are habitats for many varieties of crickets even though most are found in forested areas and grasslands.
TELLING THE TEMPERATURE WITH A CRICKET
You can calculate the temperature using the sound of a cricket. Find a place that has temperatures which are warmer than 55º F and cooler than 100º F and tally the total chirps sounded within 15 seconds. Increase this number by 40. The result is the temperature in Fahrenheit. If you prefer to know the temperature in Celsius, track the chirps heard during 25 seconds, divide that by three and adding four to the result.
USE CRICKETS TO CATCH FISH
Crickets can be used as live bait to secure a satisfying meal of fresh fish. Fishing with live crickets is most effective in small lakes and within fifteen feet of the shoreline.
Carefully secure your hook to the fishing line before placing your cricket onto the hook. Hold the cricket firmly between your thumb and fingers while you insert the hook held in your other hand. Some instruct that the barb of the hook should be inserted into the thorax behind the cricket's head, pressed through the length of the cricket's body and exited via the rear end just under the tail. Yet, old fishermen tell me that the best way is to insert the hook into the rear, just beneath the tail and move it up through the body until the barb exits through the thorax located just beneath the head. By positioning the hook through the length of the body, your cricket will not be easily stolen by nibblers.
Use an empty can as a reel for your fishing line. Anchor the free end of your fishing line and cast the baited hook into the water. Reel in your line by wrapping it around the can. Continue to cast and reel in your line until you have a fish.
AS A FOOD SOURCE
Compared to cattle raised for food, a cricket can reproduce nearly 20 times faster. Within 3 to 4 weeks, a female can lay over a thousand eggs. Crickets can thrive using a fraction of the space and food required to produce an equivalent amount of consumable meat from other livestock. Compared to pigs and chickens, crickets produce meat at twice the rate. They are able to provide meat at four times the rate of sheep, and six times the rate of cattle when allowances are made for carcass trim and dressing.
The meat from crickets provide protein and other nutrients. Along with 21 mg of calcium, 100 grams of cricket meat also contains 21% protein, 6% fat, and 3% carbohydrate. For each gram dry weight of cricket meat there is 63 to 122 milligrams of fatty acid (linoleic acid & a0linolenic acid), copper, magnesium and iron. All of this is available for the cost of vegetable table scraps.
HERDING CRICKETS
The Paiute people used to harvest crickets by digging a series of large trenches. Dry straw would be placed over this. Large numbers of crickets would be herded into the trenches. The crickets were roasted when the straw was set on fire. The roasted crickets were harvested by the bushel and later ground to make protein enriched flour that was used to bake bread.
FARMING CRICKETS
To ensure a supply of crickets without the danger of pesticide exposure raise your own. Put about two inches of soil in the bottom of a large aquarium. Egg cartons can be placed inside to serve as roosts. Moistened cotton balls will provide them with water. Leave grated bits of vegetable and grain scraps for them to eat, making sure they have a ready supply of fresh foods. Take the time to lightly mist the soil every few days. Secure the aquarium with a tight-fitting lid because crickets are escape artists and will try to get away whenever you open the lid.
PREPARATION
Place in a colander your selection of crickets. Quickly put a section of wire screening or cheesecloth over the top to keep the insects in place. Run water over the top to rinse them thoroughly. Shake the excess water from the container. Seal the crickets in a container and place this in the freezer for 15 minutes. While this length of time will be enough to kill the crickets, it will not be enough time to freeze them. Remove them from the freezer and rinse them again. If you prefer, the hind legs, heads and wing cases can be removed. The legs can be painful to swallow and will sometimes get stuck in the teeth. Crickets can be consumed raw, but they can also be dehydrated or roasted and incorporated into your recipes.
TAKE PRECAUTIONS
Be careful when selecting crickets for food. Avoid those found near or in residential areas as these might have been exposed to chemical insecticides or herbicides.

Like the other answer says, front drag reels have the drag adjustment on the "top" of the spool. Rear drag reels have adjustment on the back, behind the body frame.
Reels that are specifically designed for surf fishing are generally "sealed" bodied to prevent salt corrosion; spools are generally tapered down allowing for smoother, longer casting; drags are designed to be sealed to prevent sand from entering the stack causing erratic behavior.
Baitrunner reels are reels that have incorporated the ability to disengage the main drag on the spool, typically through a switch on the rear of the reel body. When switched "on" the reel's main drag stack on the top of the spool is disengaged, allowing the spool to rotate/feed line out. The purpose of this feature is to allow a fish to take the offering/bait and run with it, allowing further inhalation.
In order to feed line out with SOME tension (so the fish doesn't just rip all your line and birds nest you in the process!), there is a secondary adjustable drag system. This is typically adjusted by a dial on the rear of the reel body. This provides minimal drag pressure, usually under 2.5lbs maximum.
(EXAMPLE. - when I use bait fishing for striper, sometimes I'll use a baitrunner reel to allow the striper to take the bait, run for a little bit - that way I know it's got the bait securely in the mouth, and THEN I'll set the hook - increasing my chances of the striper getting hooked since it had more time to take the bait because the reel was able to feed out line with little resistance)
