i want to paint my motorcycle.?
Last Year i bought a 2000 Suzuki Bandit 600. It's black, but unfortunately i have to change the gas tank to a silver one. Since this motorcycle is "naked" it doesn't have many parts that need painted. This would be a very neat project to start. What would be the essentials i would need to complete this task. Starting with which Paint, sanding method, airbrush, room conditions,etc. please help me out here. Thanks!
This sounds like a great project, Bandit's are really sick bikes. The key to a good paintjob is preparation, preparation and preparation. You do not need a lot of expensive equipment, or a tremendous amount of skill to get a good paintjob. You will want to start by sanding down all of the metal that you are going to be working on. Get everything down to a nice scuffed surface, you want to get it so that paint will stick well to it. If you have any dings or dents you may want to go down to bare metal, hit it with a self etching primer, and then do your body work over the primer. Once you have done any body filler work, you want to sand it and get it worked out so that it is a nice as you can possibly make it. I like to then use a building primer, which is a little more forgiving for any iffy body work that you have done and it fills in any small scratches. Once you have it primed You can then begin the spraying of actual paint. Build up your paint in thin layers and sand with fine grit paper as you proceed. Once you get your final paint layer down you will want to wet sand with progressively less coarse papers down to about 2500-4000 grit (use plenty of water). You will eventually work to compound and then wax. If you are planning on clear coating you will want to do this before the compound and wax and you can wet sand your clear coat. Regarding temperature, you need to work in a 75 degree environment with the paint and body fillers etc. You don't want it to be too humid. Regarding paint, you can get exceptional quality from a spray can. I have used Dupli-Color products many times which are available at almost any auto parts store. Good luck
