Florida Spring Diving - Volume Two
Home to over 750 freshwater springs, Florida provides a unique, exciting experience to Scuba divers available nowhere else in the world. More world-class cave divers, rescue divers, and instructors call the state of Florida home than any other state in the US, and more than any other nation in the world.
The real draw to Florida is the sheer variety in diving experiences available. From any point in the state, you can experience spring, river, lake, ocean, and cave diving with 4 hours of driving or less. This versatility makes Florida very popular for instructors, as they can train for any diving environment with very little travel.
Continuing my series of Florida springs, I will discuss another natural offering found in the Florida Panhandle.
Vortex Spring
Touting itself as the "Fountain of Cool," Vortex spring is a highly-developed first magnitude spring with a medium sized basin. "Cool" may even be an understatement, as the water in Vortex Spring remains a constant 68 degrees. That may just seem slightly below comfortable room temperature, but 68 degrees in the water feels like 20 degrees in the air!
The spring itself churns out 28 million gallons of water every day, and because it is shut off from the accompanying river, it is always crystal clear. So clear, in fact, that many divers of the past have described Vortex waters as "Gin clear." It is nice to know that you will never have to be worried about the visibility when planning a dive trip to Vortex Spring.
The property is well developed, and could be described as anything but pristine. There is a large, fully-featured dive shop on site, with a covered pavilion staging area. The land surrounding the spring features wooden and stone retaining walls, along with water slides, rope swings, and diving platforms for swimmers to enjoy. There are two platforms for Scuba entry use.
The underwater area for divers is also heavily developed, featuring two swim-through cave simulators, and a dive bell. At 20 feet below the surface, there is a large, flat concrete platform form use when practicing diving skills. Most Saturdays and Sundays, groups of diving classes can be seen in this area.
There is a large, permanent line running from a buoy on the surface all the way down to the cavern 52 feet below. The line provides safe entry and exit for cave and cavern divers, as well as good line training for learners. At the base of the line is a moderately sized cavern area, complete with a sign warning inexperienced divers of the dangers involved in venturing forward.
With proper training, cave divers will find a permanent wall-mounted guide wire and "Christmas tree" lights guiding them into the Vortex Spring cave. Following the guide in about 150 feet, the cave diver will encounter the first of three restrictions. Venturing beyond this restriction, however, is only possible with permission and registration at the front desk, as there is a locked grate preventing inexperienced divers from putting themselves in a dangerous situation.
Another unique feature divers will encounter at Vortex spring is a breathtaking diversity of marine life. The spring basin has been stocked with literally hundreds of fish, including Japanese Koi and rare "Shadow Bass." The usual familiar species such as large mouth bass, bluegill, grass carp, et al can also be seen swimming about the basin in large schools. For divers willing to venture into the cavern, freshwater eels and catfish are abundant.
All things considered, Vortex spring is heavily developed, but offers many diverse diving experiences all in one place. It is a great learning environment, and has something enjoyable for divers at all levels of experience. Whether it is your first or fiftieth dive at Vortex, you are sure to see something new. If you are a scuba diver in the Florida area, this is not one you will want to miss.

what are my chances of being injured if i pick infantry as my MOS?
i plan to join the army soon for academic reasons and i am having a tough time deciding on an MOS. i am leaning towards Infantry but with all of the media going on about death and shell shock and losing limbs i just wanna know realistically what are my chances of becoming permanently disabled or worse. my main choices for my MOS are Diver, Infantry and if i qualify Special Forces weapons specialist
The reason that media is going on is because those sensational stories are what sells.
Yes you can get hurt. You can get hurt doing anything. One Marine told me that the last Marine funeral he attended was for a mechanic.
I think percentage-wise it's around 13%. So overall, the chances are pretty slim. However, keep in mind that this does not mean it won't be you. After all, SOMEONE makes up that 13%.
