Light Bass
One Lost Bass
You know if you're a bass fisherman every once in a while that one big bass comes along. The one that you tell your grandchildren about. The one you tell all your friends about.
You know, "That bass was so big that water is still running in the hole that I pulled him out of."
"That bass was so big the picture of him weights eight pounds."
"That bass was so big that it's shadow took two full grown men to load into the truck."
Okay you get my drift it was a big bass.
This particular day me and my friend Victor were fishing in a lake in an old iron quarry, the ore mines for folks knowledgable about Shelby Alabama. We always argued about where we wanted to fish, I liked weed beds and stick ups and he liked rock piles, so we took a sixteen foot long canoe and cut it in half and made us a couple of eight foot long boats. Of course we sealed the ends of the things up. Us rednecks is pretty smart when it comes to some things.
We like bass fishing and would spend as much time out in the boats on a lake, pond, creek, river or whatever held enough water to float the things.
As I was saying this particular day we were fishing in a lake called the lily pad pond, cause it was full of lily pads.
I had already hooked one bass that weighed approximately a pound and a half, but because of the way it had taken the hook I knew it would die, so I put that one on the stringer to take home and clean.
I made a cast with a green and black plastic worm and thought I had gotten hung on a log or something.
When I pulled all that happened is my half canoe went toward where I was hung, as I got close to it, the thing took off.
"Great I've snagged a turtle." I said aloud.
"That turtle is swimming mighty fast". He replied.
"Great I snagged a darn alligator." I said. Although as far as I know no alligators have ever been seen in that lake.
I've been pulled by fish before in the little boat but this thing was dragging me around like the shark pulling the drums in Jaws.
Believe me that went through my mind also. "Great a freshwater shark". I thought to myself.
Finally the fish came up and jumped. It was a spectacular sight seeing that big bass clear the water like it did.
Eventually it tired out. Eventually being about forty five minutes after I hooked it.
When I finally got the big bass into the boat, Victor paddled over to me and joined me in a case of total awe, as we stared at the big fish. "This has to be the biggest bass I have ever caught". I said.
"Hell that's the biggest bass I've ever seen". He said.
I could literally stick my hand in this fishes mouth with room all the way around, and I have big hands.
I decided this fish was a keeper so I slid it down onto my stringer with the other bass that I had caught.
The big bass opened his gills and the smaller bass passed right through his gills and out of his mouth.
The big bass was gone. I was in shock. My fish! What the??? Why???? Oh crap!!! There were some other words that I will not share here, that passed my lips that day as the big bass returned to his underwater world.
I looked at Victor and said. "I think I'm going to be sick for losing that fish."
He looked at me and said "What fish?"
Looking back on things, I don't much believe in keeping trophies and to me it would have been a shame to kill that fish for a trophy. Now getting my picture taken with it and then having a fish fry that's another thing.
That was several years ago and although I have fished that hole a few more times I just cant help but wonder if that big bass is still in there.
