Jigs Spinnerbaits
Which rod would be better for throwin jigs and plastic lizards? A 7'M or 7'MH.?
Hi. I have 2 baitcasting setups and 1 spinning setup. The spinning setup is for finesse baits. One of the baitcasters is for spinnerbaits and lipless crankbaits, and the other is for jigs and soft plastics. The jigs and soft plastics I will be throwing are around 1/4 to 3/8 oz. The spinnerbaits and lipless cranks I will be throwing are around 3/8 to 1/2 oz. Which rod, a 7'MH and a 7'M would be better for which bait? I know the heavier the bait, the heavier the power in most cases, but I've heard MH is best for jigs and soft plastics, while a lower power rod, like a M, is best for cranks and spinnerbaits. Could someone please help?
Wow, rod power questions seem to be popular today. Here is my opinion on the issue, other educated opinions may differ slightly due to taste.
First Ill start with jig and worm rods. You mentioned your finesse setup being a spinning outfit, thats good. I would recomend using a lite florocarbon line and keep everything as lite as possible on this rig. If I only had 1 worm/jig rod it would be a 7' med hvy rod w/ a reel that has a gear ratio in the low 5s spooled w/ 15-17 lb mono. The reason I bump up to a med hvy rod is when jig/worm fishing you need a rod with some backbone to set the hook good. I use 20 lb braid on the spinnerbait rod. i use the braid for feel, the med power rod for give and the extra fast action rod so the drag from the spinner blades doesnt load up my rod too much. hope this helps, i can get into flipping rods, topwater and skipping rods too.
Crankbait rod- I like using a 7' med rod with a reel ratio around 6 spooled with 30-40lb braid. I use braid to help me feel my lure and it allows me to pull through weeds and grass without stretching. Only problem with no stretch is no "give" or forgivness when fighting a fish, this is why I drop down to a med action rod.
Spinnerbait rod. I like to use a 6'6 med power "extra fast action" rod. with a 7.2 reel
