how do i set the hook good when fishing?
almost every time i go fishing i get loads of bites but cant set the hook unless im using a treble hook since they hook in better. how do i set the line on a single hook lure and do a good job about it so the fish doesnt get away like it using does?
First, sharpen your hook. Use a little file or stone to put a point on it so it digs into your fingernail when you use barely any pressure.
Second, fish with your line straight. If you're bait fishing with a light weight and there's a little breeze, there can be a huge amount of slack in your line, which means that when you pull the rod back to set, you're not moving the hook at all.
Third, make sure the fish has the hook in its mouth before setting. With hard lures, you don't need to wait, but with a bait or soft lure, a fish might be pecking at the edges of the bait. Wait until you feel some weight before setting, wind down on the fish so the line is tight, and then set. (You might also be feeling pecks from fish which are too small to actually get the bait in their mouths.)
Finally, have the rod in a good position to actually move the hook when you swing. If it's at a 90 degree angle to the line when you start to swing, the rod bending as you pull will make the hook move very little. Start your set with the rod pointed sort of in the direction of the line, no more than about 45 degrees from the direction of the line, and if you're retrieving a lure, make sure you don't stop winding when you set.
That's a lot of stuff, but the main points are a sharp hook, tight line, and and keep winding.
