2 things start to happen the instant a projectile leaves the barrel of the firearm, airgun, or any projectile weapon.
Deceleration and drop. Just for the sake of explanation, let's call the projectile a bullet, once the bullet leaves the barrel, it begins to drop, just as a marble that rolls off the kitchen table falls the moment it leaves the tables surface, it doesn't hang there in mid air holding a "yikes" sign before falling. Regardless of velocity, gravity has the same effect on all objects that are unsupported. The bore of the rifle supports the bullet until it exits, it still has velocity, but the support is gone and gravity takes hold and pulls it down.
