The Incredible Colors Of Koi
When you see the amazing color patterns on koi fish, it's easy to see why the Japanese are so proud of their creative ability to choose and breed Koi fish to produce the mesmerizing Koi combinations. That is one of the major reasons koi fish are still so popular and much loved by their owners and caretakers.
When looking for a koi fish, make sure their colors are bright -- red Koi must be vivid red and black Koi must be colored a dark, jet black. Dull black koi or koi with scales, spots or grey markings are not well-kept fish, just like white koi that are not snowy white but yellowing or spattered with specks of grey.
Vivid colors indicate healthy koi and when they are unwell or living in poor water conditions, koi change color and become dull. When buying koi, it is essential to understand how color reflects the health of a koi and this will help you buy a well-kept fish. Koi fish needs special attention and care.
Keep an eye on the color changes; this will help you ensure that you are giving your koi adequate care.
Koi fish come in a whole range of gorgeous colors, the most popular being red, white, black, blue, yellow and off-white. The Japanese established some explicit terms and phrases to describe the various colors and characteristics of koi fish.
Breeders have also identified and named a number of Koi fish categories used to distinguish the different kinds. The most popular category is the Gosanke category, which contains the Kohaku, Taisho Sanshoki and Showa Sanshoki species of koi.
The Kohaku koi is white with red markings. When buying a Kohaku koi, look for a snowy white color and vivid red markings that have discrete edges. These red markings should cover 50-70% of the koi's entire body.
Taisho Sanshoki koi (popularly known as Taisho Sanke or just Sanke) are white fish with exuberant red and black markings. Similar to the Kohaku, make sure the fish has a snow white body with beautiful dark red and black markings.
Akin to the Sanke koi, the Showa Sanshoki (or just Showa) koi are also white colored fish with black and red markings. Unlike the Sanke, however, the Showa koi have a black body with red and white markings.
Many other varieties of koi are available, each with their distinct color patterns. Consider the Ogon koi, which exist in a range of colors but are composed of one color only. That is, they have no markings and have an even hue. You can even get Komonryu koi with change color with the seasons!
Good news is that you can improve your koi's health – in this case, the color. Feed them with a diet rich in marigold, shrimps, plankton and blue-green algae (Spirulina). These ingredients are commonly added to commercially prepared foods that are produced specifically for enhancing koi colors.
You can also feed your Koi with frozen foods such as brine shrimp and daphnia. This diet is rich in high carotenoid pigment concentrations, which are predominant skin pigments in Koi.

When will my baby Koi Fish get coloured? they have no point or color?
I have too many baby koi fishes at my pond and now they are 2cm (0.8inc) long and no color. When ll they have their color? and how can i understand the better quality ones now. (i can email some photos of them) and is there any one who got a growing schedule of koi fishes? how big they ll grow by the time to time in following weeks?
How big and how fast koi grow depends on the water temperature, water quality, how much they are fed, how big their environment (tank/pond) is, and what variety of koi they are. The warmer the water, the faster they grow (up to about 85-90 degrees - over that and you've got fish soup!). The importance of good water quality can't be over-emphasized: take care of the water, and the fishes take care of themselves! Plus, it's hard to put much energy into growing when they're fighting off disease or parasites, or fighting for oxygen or struggling with burned gills, etc.
Many small feedings in the course of a day are better than one or two big ones. Obviously, the bigger the container they are in, the bigger they have the potential to grow. As for varieties, chagoi (the brownish/copper colored ones that look most like wild carp) and soragoi (grayish-silver ones) grow very fast. At the other end of the spectrum, utsuri koi (black with a colored pattern) seem to grow very slowly and stay on the smaller side. The rest (kohaku, asagi, bekko, etc., etc.) tend to be somewhere in between those two extremes.
It is possible, that by the end of their first summer, you could have some 6"-8", maybe even 10" koi. Most will probably be in the 4"-6" range, though. Their color will start coming up by the time they are a couple of months old. Black will probably be the first color to come up but the last color to fully develop, meaning that any fry that has a lot of black now, will likely just get blacker and blacker the bigger it gets. They usually end up just muddy. The reds, yellows, etc., don't come up until after the black has started, and those colors are usually the first to fade, too. You just can't rely on them keeping their colors until they get to be pretty good sized fish - I would ay at least 12" (I've had them that had black come up or that lost red, etc., even as 14"-16" fish, though...).
When they are about an inch long is the best time to cull them - any that swim weird, have bent backs or misshapen fins, etc. - just euthanize those in a bucket of water with clove oil. Then, go out every other day or so and pick out those that have died on their own and others you see with obvious defects. If it was me, I'd start picking off some of the all black ones - they'll just be a mud fish when they're grown (unlessing you are trying to get crows, i.e.,all-black ones. They are considered good luck, but most likely you'd get black with a few orange or bronze scales and really mottled pattern....) You'll eventually get your fry population down to a more manageable size, and once they are thinned out, they will grow more and you will be able to choose the qualities you want to see in a larger fish.
