Tips For Making Saltwater Fishing Lures

Making your own fishing tackle, just as fly tying, can be a very rewarding activity. I actually enjoy making lures and tying flies as much as I do fishing.

If you live up North, it's also a great way to stave off the Cabin Blues of deep winter. You won't really save any money, but you can derive deep satisfaction from catching fish on something you hand-crafted yourself.

I can't describe the feeling of accomplisment, especially when other anglers come over to look at your creations.

If you have it in mind to make lures and sell them on EBay to make money, I hate to disappoint you, but China cranks out millions of inexpensive flies and lures every year, and re-sellers have flooded the internet with them, just like retail stores. You can get 12 French spinners for as little as $9.00 on EBay.

There is no way you can make them that cheap at home. Are they as good as your own hand-crafted ones? Of course not.

A lot of the time they don't even work right, and fall apart after a few fish. But...they got sold! If you're going to get into tacklecraft, do it for your own enjoyment. Your not going to get rich making lures.

I have made lures out of left-over Balsa Wood, old teaspoons, costume jewlery and the like. They worked fine. But you can economically get the correct parts online to make lures as good as anything out there. My favorite places are

Barlow's Tackle Express and Cabelas

These two places carry everything you'll ever need to make any lure or fly you can imagine, as well as sinkers, jigheads, rods and nets.

I won't go in to flies here, because that could cover several books. I will concentrate on conventional lures, going from the simplest, to the most complicated. We'll start with the most low-tech, but one of the most successful lures...the spoon.

A spoon is just what the name suggests. A convex surface, painted or textured, or just plain smooth, and a plain concave surface which is the bottom of the lure. It has a small hole drilled or punched in each end, with a split ring and hook on one end, and a plain hole, or swivel on the other to tie the line on.

That's it. On the retrieve, it wobbles, darts from side to side, flutters and drives fish crazy. They can even be tiiped with live bait ,or skirts, or plastic bodies. A plain version can easily be made by cutting the handle off of a suitable sized culinary spoon and filing the cut smooth.

Then simply drill a small hole in each end and attack a spit ring and hook at the larger end, and tie your line to the other hole. I would recommend attaching a split ring and swivel to the line end, because due to the violent action of the lure, the metal can cut your line.

You can paint the spoon, hammer a texture onto it, dress the hook with bucktail , marabou, or a rubber skirt, or tip it with whatever you want.

How to use Crankbaits, Spinnerbaits, Jig and Pig, Bucktail Jig, Topwater Plugs, and Tail Spinners?

I have them in my tackle box, but I never had any intentions to use them because I don't know how. I hear you are suppose to cast and reel in and a technique to mimic a real fish. But these lures are so light, am I suppose to put any weights on them, and if so how?
Or am I just suppose to use them the way it is?
Are these lures made to cast far from where you are standing?

The guy above me is about as wrong as he can be. Sorry dude. These plastic "toys" are responsible for catching some awesome fish...if you know how to use them. These baits are predominantly used for catching different species of black bass, but can also be used for others.

Crankbaits- chunk 'em out and reel them in. Crankbaits dive, so you want one that will dive to the appropriate depth. Experiment with what you have in these and see how deep they go. I like to fish these around structure. Mainly contours of the body of water you are fishing. With crankbaits, if you aren't getting hung up a little on bottom or other stuff, you aren't doing it right.

Spinnerbaits- Very versatile lures. You can run these just under the surface if the fish are higher in the water column, or let them sink and run them closer to the bottom. You can reel them in really fast, or slow, which can make all the difference in the world. Also try hopping them a little bit while you're reeling in to give the skirt some extra action. Run these in some of the same places I mentioned for crankbaits in addition to along the edge of grass beds and in between stumps. Color doesn't matter as long as its white or chartreuse.

Jig and Pig- One of my favorite lures, but also one of the most frustrating to use. Jigs are also a very versatile bait. You can swim them, crawl them, hop them... and the list goes on. But where they really shine is when you pitch them next to a stump or in a grass mat. Many fish will hit while its sinking, or pick it up as you twitch and hop it along the bottom. The big key for these baits is that you need to fish SLOWLY. I mean as slow as you possibly can stand it without just letting it sit. Very subtle movements also. Jigs are considered a definite big bass lure. On slow days, you may not catch as many fish, but when you do catch one, it'll be a slob.

Bucktail jig- Not a very popular largemouth bass lure, but very good for striped bass. Fish it similarly to a spinner bait if it has a spinner or just kind of jig it and hop it on the bottom of wherever you're fishing.

Topwater plugs- EXTREMELY FUN! Early in the morning as the sun is rising, or when the sun is going down, especially in the hot summer months, fish will move up to shallower water and look towards the surface. There are a couple of techniques that work well. Walking the dog is where you pop your rod downward consistently while reeling in and the lure should make a zig zag pattern. On many days, the most important thing to do is STOP every 5-6 twitches, and let the lure sit until all of the ripples in the water have dissipated. When you twitch it after a stop, hold on baby. Be sure to not set the hook as soon as a fish explodes on the lure. Wait for a second until he's underwater and you can feel him or else you'll take the lure away from him.

Senkos- Just one example of the COUNTLESS soft plastic lures available. They are a heavier worm on their own, so most people fish them weightless. Look up texas rig on the internet and just don't put a weight on and you'll be good to go. Fish these around cover such as grass or stumps and let them sink. If you have a pool, go pitch one in and experiment with making it dart through the water, sink, and wiggle. There are tons of ways to fish this worm, so go ahead and experiment. And yes, they are a decent drop shot lure. Scent doesn't really have anything to do with how they're supposed to be fished.

These lures should not require extra weights to throw, and if they are that light, you should use lighter rods, line etc. The distance you can cast these depends on the weight and your rod setup. Hope that helps out some.
