Brook Trout Fishing- Information and Tips
The brook trout is a a native trout of the United States and is also one the most popular within the anglers community to fish for. They are a very allusive fish which likes the game of hide and seek. This is the challenge that draws anglers and the average fisherman to find and intise these beautiful fish into striking.
You can find theses fish in moderately mowing currents of water and even lakes with the proper temperature being around 65 degrees or lower. They also require highly oxygenated water thats is why you mainly find them in swift moving creeks and streams. They will migrate up and down the streams of water in search of the right temperature of water. The gravel bottoms of creeks keep the the water temperature down making it an ideal location for trout to be. You can find brook trout hiding around or under big rocks, under the banks edges, or under bushes or trees that hang over the creek. They hide here for protection for overhead threats such as birds and other preditors.
Baits to consider using when fishing for brook trout small spinners, grasshoppers, may flies,and worms. Artificial flies is another good bait when fly fishing. You can also try homemade baits if you like. I have found that using spinners and grasshoppers to work the best for me. When the streams are full of suckkers the trout will engorge themselves on suckkers, so you may have to travel up or down stream away from the suckers to find trout that hungry.
For larger creeks you may want to wade them to be able to access more areas to fish. Try not to do alot splashing around to scare the trout off they have a good sence of hearing and smell. You really need to fish the areas of the creek that have hiding places for the trout to be in such as logs, rocks, and over hanging bushes. You may also want to take several different types of bait to figure out what they are eating on. What trout are hitting today may not be what they are hitting tomorrow, so take an assortment of baits and lures.
I get the most satisfaction out of brook trout fishing than any other type of trout fishing but that is me, other anglers have different methods of fishing that works for them. I know my methods work and that is what I plan on sticking with, not to say that I want try new methods but if it ain't broken don't fix it.

I sent you an e-mail about this, but I guess I can repeat some of the stuff here.
You asked about the white stripe along the bottom of the lower (pectoral, pelvic, and anal) fins. Brook trout always have these stripes, and they are very visible because the lower part of the brook trouts fins are almost black, then comes the highly contrasting white stripe along the very bottom edge. It stands out. Brown trout may also have this white stripe, particularly on their pelvic and anal fins. Sometimes you don't notice it because brown trout fins are more pale so the white does not stand out.
Brook trout have pink or reddish spots, but they are usually haloed with blue. Most brown trout have pink or reddish spots, but they may or may not be distinctively haloed, and in my experience they are more often haloed with white, gray, or yellow. I have not caught brown trout or brook trout in hundreds of different drainages, so I don't know about regional differences in presentation -- YMMV.
Brook trout are red/orange/pinkish on the undersides. In my experience this redness is quite dramatic, and it presents itself in all sizes and throughout the year. Brown trout may display some very bright redness on their bodies and gill plates, but that usually applies to larger browns and more around spawning season (late fall, early winter). Brook trout are always "colored up," and they have a lot of frosty white around their chins and throats. Brown trout are usually just kinda pale or yellowish on the bottom of their bodies and by their chin/throats.
Main thing is the back -- brook trout have a distinctive maze-like pattern that is difficult to confuse with other trout once you've seen it. This pattern is very noticeable on their backs and dorsal fin, and the coloration is usually green with golden-hued mottling. Once you've caught a few of each fish, it will be almost impossible to mistake one for the other.
Basically, the fish have different color palettes, which will become obvious to you after you catch a few of each. The brook trout is more colorful, made up of green, red, black, gold, and frosty white. The brown trout is made up of mainly yellows and browns, with occasional splashes of red and touches of white. The brookie has mottling, a wavy, mazelike pattern, along with spots. The brown has only spots. Both fish can be really beautiful, but a big, healthy brook trout is just amazing to see.
Tiger trout (hybrid of brown and brook) are likewise very distinctive because the maze-like pattern is spread over almost the entire body. It doesn't really look like tiger striping, but it's very noticeable, does not include dots, and hard to confuse with the dots of a brown trout. Naturally occurring tiger trout are rare. That is, they don't hybridize with brook trout just everywhere. If you have tiger trout in your waterbody, they probably came from a hatchery and were put there by a state agency. This means you can check your fishing regulations to help with IDing the fish.
