Lake Texoma, the Only Lake in America with Naturally Spawning Stripers
Lake Texoma fishing guides agree this lake is an an ideal striper lake. Texoma is the only freshwater lake where striper spawn naturally so it has not been stocked with stripers since 1970.
Spawning at Lake Texoma is triggered by an increase in water temperature and generally occurs in April, May and early June. As the female broadcasts eggs in the current they are fertilized by the male. The fertilized eggs need 28 to 80 hours to drift downstream and hatch, depending on the water temperature. The river flow must be roughly one-foot per second in order to keep the eggs afloat. If they sink then the sediments reduce oxygen and they will not hatch. This requirement for flowing water is why Striped Bass don't reproduce naturally in most resorvoirs and lakes.
At the time of hatching, a tiny transparent fish emerges with a heavy yolk sac from which it gets its nourishment. The fry at this stage is at the mercy of the water currents. Within four to five days, the yolk sac is absorbed and the fry begins to swim and feed on small crustaceans.
Striped Bass males are fast-growing may reach 10 to 12 inches in the first year and sexual maturity at two years. Females can reach maturity at four years. Nearly all of the females are mature at five years of age when they reach a weight of six pounds or a length of twenty-three inches. Depending on the size of the female, they may can lay 14,000 to 5 million eggs.
