Baits Lures
Best baits or lures for trout in your opinion?
Just getting into fishing, saving up for a rod and reel combo. But any opinions on the best or most successful baits/lures for trout? The river i will be fishing can be considered murky. I was thinking about dough balls, any recipes?

its really a matter of what time of the year and where/how you'll be fishing.
this time of the year trout are near teh surface and usually closer to shore. flies and a fly rod work very well.
kastmasters and rooster tails too. its all about using top or very shallow baits and lures.
some people swear by power bait or salmon eggs, while they can and do work, it still needs to be at the right depth. but i do better with nightcrawlers, when you need to get deeper then a clip on bobber allows, slip bobbers are great.
those are all methods that can work well either on the shore or on a stationary boat.
but when it gets hot again and the trout run deeper, nothing works better then trolling.
a set of baby flashers with a night crawler while going 1.0 mph exactly works well, but its so much hardware you cant really feel the fish.
what i really like for how they work and the fight you get to feel, worth's rainbow runner spoons in the electric green color, 20' of mono line for an invisible leader (to start with, tie on another 20' once it gets under 10' long) and use lead core line on a reel meant for trolling. lead core line is the weight, and you cant feel it, so you only have a small spoon or a fish (hopefully a BIG fish) to feel. and its color coded every 10 yards, at 1.0 mph 10 yards out is 10 feet down.
trolling in summer you want to be about 1/2 to 2/3 of the depth down. if its 60 feet deep, you want to be 30-40 feet deep.
i've also successfully used the rainbow runner spoons in places where there was enough water current just from the shore.
whiskytown in cali, go by the power house with a pole and a rainbow runner, let out 10' of line and just watch the fish come after your spoon. it would be boring if it wasnt so successful.
