Since the earthquake a month ago, Japan has seen one natural incident after another. With earthquakes, tsunamis and snow, they really didn't need anything else to add to the mix. But another earthquake on the 11th of April has left the country reeling, as the authorities declared the nuclear accident at Fukushima a disaster level seven, when it had previously been ranked at five putting the nuclear disaster on the same level as the infamous Chernobyl accident in the eighties.

The government have called for evacuation of a few of the towns around the Fukushima Daaichi area, in fear that if not the people may receive a high level of radiation from the explosion. Evacuations have so far involved eighty five thousand people, and they don't know how many more people are set to be involved in the latest processes.

If you have booked a holiday to Japan then you may have been attracted by the polar opposites in culture, and drawn to the land of the rising sun. Japan observes some ancient superstitions, for example you shouldn't stick your chopsticks vertically in a bowl of rice, as this is synonymous of death in Buddhist funeral ceremonies. You should also avoid the number four when giving gifts, as in the Japanese language the pronunciation of the word ‘four' is much the same as the word ‘death' and it is therefore seen as highly rude. Another interesting ritual they observe is that when people get married, they give an odd number of banknotes to the couple, as they believe if they are given even numbers they are easier to divide, and therefore the couple will find it easier to split up.

If you are planning on travelling to Japan at the moment, then the government advice is to go unless it is essential, especially to areas north east of Tokyo. This area continues to be devastated by recent events, and is in danger of tremors and possible further damage. British nationals are being urged to follow the advice of the Japanese authorities. I don't remember, but I heard it long ago that Japan once reeled in a giant from the sea. The giant had figures much like we humans do now, but the Japanese decide to throw it back into the ocean because it stink too much.

Well----

1. is it in current myths and legends in that country or was it from an old movie?
2. if it was big enough to be reeled in, you'd be limited to something smaller and lighter than a whale, not a true giant.
3. no physical evidence was ever kept (very telling, no proof. People just 'say' it happened)
4. why would anyone take it seriously if there's no proof.
