Nightmare On Acacia Avenue
This article applies equally to my other two children as well but we'll use J*** as an example - Thanks J*** !
My youngest son is at a University in the East of England and is in his first year.
We are all very proud of him (as we are with the other 2 children), and although it's tough going for him, he is doing really well.
However, what a nightmare it is to rent a place live!
Okay, you look in the local papers and magazines for a place to rent which is ok but they only give minimal information and many of the places advertised were let by the time we rang them up. Kids being web-confident these days tend to hit the internet anyway. There's a massive choice and you can see pictures and check out the location as well but they only give you a limited amount of info. How are you supposed to work out a budget when you haven't got the full details? When you have found a few properties that you like, you have to contact a Letting Agent to find out more. You have to register and then pay an admin fee to be considered for a property. This is often well over £100 and probably nearer $200. On top of that you will have to pay for a Tenant Reference Check and possibly a Tenant Guarantee charge.
When you have finally found a property you like, you will have to pay 1 month's deposit and then 1 month advance rental payment. That is a helluva lot of money to find for most people!
Don't forget, you will also have to pay the council tax, water rates, electricity, and gas bills, although they are sometimes included in the rent.
When my eldest son was looking for a place to rent, it did cross my mind that there must be a better way but I thought nothing more about it when everything finally settled down. I was too busy trying to make a living,etc. When my daughter also started to look for a place to rent, I became quite frustrated when I percieved that we were being seemingly 'stitched up' at every turn yet again!
That was it, opportunity borne out of necessity, or is that adversity
