About the Author
Would live koi in the 8" to 12" range work for bait for big largemouth bass?
A friend of a friend has a pretty good sized koi pond that is getting a little on the overstocked side and we're curious if the smaller ones will work for bait. This is in California and I know transporting live fish to different bodies of water is illegal but we will probably be using them for bait in the friend of a friend's grandparent's private pond. I know there are big bass in there, I've seen them.
Also, can you tell me how to hook them?
Wait a minute, aren't you the same idiot that wanted to keep a 12 inch white sturgeon in a 55 gallon aquarium with a 10 inch oscar? Or am I thinking of some other satanic soft drink? I think you called me an asshole a couple times.
Anyway... sure. Just be sure to destroy the ones that you DON'T use. Here in California, or anywhere else for that matter, a big bass will eat whatever it can get in its mouth. And here in California, that happens to be 12 to 14 inch rainbow trout and other fish of relatively good eating size. In Florida, guys use 8 to 12 inch golden shiners for bass and those are readily taken. So what the hell, why not a koi!
I'm thinking... I'm thinking you could rig them up like you would a live shad or a shiner. Y'know, with a big float or balloon maybe. Tie a heavy wire 6/0 to 8/0 extra-wide-gap worm hook to your main line and attach a big red 'n white bobber or a filled-with-air water balloon about 2 to 3 feet above the hook. Add another foot or so if you want. Then, take your big hook and run it through the koi's back ABOVE the spinal cord and backbone, you want to keep it alive for as long as possible... jabbing the hook into either cord or bone will kill it immediately. Gently lob the carp close to somewhere that looks like it would be holding a big bass.
You could also try fly lining it... just remove the float or balloon and let it swim off on its own.
