obviously presentation is huge but I believe it is the Location. There are spots that are so heavily fished here in New Jersey that you would be lucky to catch a boot. I checked Google Earth and I throw any lure imaginable in these nonfished lakes and rack up 30 fish in 45 minutes.

According to Norm Albiston, the five things you can change when fishing are:
Time, Location, Movement, Depth, and Lure (or Fly)

And also to remember the the C's: Current, Cuisine, Cover.

Current: Fish could expend a lot of energy fighting the current. They try to minimize the energy expended and stay behind structure.

Fish will be where there the easiest access to food.

Cover: Some fish will stay under structure. Some stay in deep water for cover.

Cuisine: For that you'll have to think, "For the fish that I'm going for what do they eat!"

For Tout it small waterborne insect and small insects trapped in the water surface film.

For bass it may be water insects, bait fish, and small frogs and small animals (mice).

For Northern Pike its larger bait fish, small game fish, frogs and mice.

For Muskies its medium size fish, small animals (even ducklings) rats, mice and small turtles.

The next time you catch a fish, and not planning to release it, open the contents of it's stomach and see what's in it. That will give you a good indication what kind of lure or fly to use.
